We all know that using sunscreen and keeping ourselves hydrated is truly important in summer. However, we tend to forget the importance of using as well insects’ repellents.
In addition of the temperature increase, the insects’ presence also increases at this season, especially mosquitoes, which for most of us it only causes an itch or redness, but for some people, the reaction could be more serious, producing pain and leading to allergic reactions or even diseases.
Insect repellents are a really good solution for avoiding itches or worst reactions. However, we must be aware of how we should apply it so as to maximize it efficacy. It`s indispensable to carefully read the product labels in order to see how often we should reapply the product, as well as to check that the repellent has passed though the necessary studies and evaluations for ensuring that it won`t cause us any skin allergies nor irritation. Also, it’s prudent not applying the product just before or after applying sunscreen on the skin. Likewise, if you have a very sensitive skin, it`s advisable asking your pharmacist which of the repellent brand is better for you.
DEET (N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the main component of the insect repellents and depending on its quantity present in the product, it´ll defend us against insects longer. This component quantity usually varies from 10% to 35%, and for example, 20% of DEET in a repellent will protect us against insect bites approximately for 4 hours. When a mosquito comes near us, the DEET block it “senses” and confuses it so he can`t bite us successfully. For this reason, the DEET it`s quite effective at short distances from where we`ve applied the product.
Since insect repellents are composed of chemical substances, it belong to the biocides group. Biocides main objective is to destroy, neutralize or prevent action of any organism considered harmful to humans. Therefore, biocides tend to be products that can easily irritate our skin. This is the reason why it requires specific efficacy and safety tests for measuring its toxicity levels and its properties so as to carefully check that the product won`t irritate nor produce us any allergy in our skin.
